"A Drop In The Ocean" Project

Early this year BRIG was approached by Ceri Wyn Morris, Project co-ordinator for O Dan y Môr a’i Donnau / Living Coasts Living Seas project within Gwynedd Council about a possible co-operation with BRIG.

She explained that one of the projects they had under development was called ‘A Drop in the Ocean’ or ‘Diferyn o’r Môr’.

The project came about as part of the Interreg IIIA funded project O dan y Mor a'i Donnau/Living Coasts Living Seas, which aims to raise awreness of Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau Special Area of Conservation.

Through art workshops with local children in Llanbedrog, it developed into the idea of a ‘drop of water’ shape for the design, with the idea of being able to peep in to a structure to reveal the under sea scene within. Ceramic and blown glass creatures will be seen inside a galvanised steel structure, with a fused glass lid to let light in. Peep-holes will allow people to peer into this underwater scene.

Ceri was impressed by the work BRIG had done over the last year and asked if she could visit Barmouth as a possible location for this new sculpture.

We agreed and after meeting her and showing he our wonderful town, she was delighted to inform us that Barmouth would be chosen and that BRIG could work with her to make this happen.

Four months later the sculpture was put in its new home in the Harbour Gardens and has been seen by lots of keen and eager children already.

On the 18th May 2008 we had a joint opening Ceremony of the Palm Tree Project and A Drop in the Ocean Sculpture, and they were both officially opened by Elfyn Llwyd MP.

At the Harbour Gardens were Chris Knowles on the Harp and the Samba Band performed in front of a watchful and appreciative crowd. A speech by Ceri about the project was warmly received and Elfyn expressed his delight on the sculpture and the contribution both groups had made.

All of us at BRIG would like to thank the lovely Ceri for choosing our town and her generous contribution in the costs of the Opening Ceremonies. It was a pleasure working with her and everyone connected with the sculpture.
